Fantesca Estate & Winery

Susan and Duane Hoff were college sweethearts. While attending the University of Minnesota, Susan worked at a stereo shop called Sound of Music. By the time the couple married several years later, the company had grown to 12 stores — and by the time their first child was born, 50. No longer called Sound of Music, the store was now known as Best Buy.
Both Susan and Duane continued to establish successful careers in Minneapolis, helping grow Best Buy into the Fortune 100 company it is today. Eventually they were both ready to trade fast-paced corporate lifestyles for a new way of life — one where they could start a business as a family. In 2004, Susan and Duane purchased a 53-acre parcel with a 10-acre vineyard and named it Fantesca Estate & Winery.
The name of the winery comes from a character in the Italian comedy troupe that inspired Cirque Du Soleil. La Fantesca was the single female character in the early theatrical performances of Commedia dell’Arte. Both the lover and the equal of the protagonist, Harlequin, Fantesca could always be counted on to charm the audience. When we heard Fantesca described as ”Sexy, Smart, and Unpretentious,” we knew we had found a name worth living up to.
Fantesca’s mission is to create wines at the highest level of rare quality and collectability. Not only do they strive to produce the best wines they can make, they also seek to provide a highly memorable experience for their allocation members.
World-renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett has been dubbed ‘the first lady of wine’ and ‘the Queen of Cult Cabernet’ by top wine critic Robert Parker. She has been honored with five 100-point scores from the major critics during her career. Heidi is well-regarded for the exceptional finesse and quality of the wines she has crafted over the years.  In addition to Fantesca, her current portfolio includes Amuse Bouche, Paradigm, Lamborn, Kenzo Estate, Au Sommet, Vin Perdu and her own labels, La Sirena and Barrett & Barrett. She has worked previously with Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Jones Family, Grace Family, Vineyard 29, David Arthur, Barbour Vineyards and Showket.  Heidi came to Fantesca in 2008. The winery’s lineup includes the only Chardonnay she makes, as well as her only Spring Mountain Cabernet. While Heidi is most well-known for masterfully balanced, elegant and age-worthy Cabernets, she has also gained international recognition for her skill and artistry across numerous varietals.  At Fantesca, Heidi crafts not only the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the Chardonnay, but the All Great Things™ red blend.
Tony Arcudi, Fantesca’s Associate Winemaker, graduated from UC Davis with a Regents Scholarship, and then followed it up with a Fellowship from the International Wine and Food Society. He worked at Stagecoach Vineyards, and did a fellowship at Maison M. Chapoutier in France. He also worked as an Assistant Winemaker at Nickel & Nickel before joining Fantesca as Associate Winemaker in 2009. In addition to working closely with Heidi Barrett on all of Fantesca’s wines, Tony is the sole Winemaker on Fantesca’s King Richard’s Reserve Pinot Noir. Tony puts all his experiences into his winemaking, including the detours, bringing together art, science and agriculture.
DLynn Proctor has been a prominent figure in the beverage & hospitality industry for over 15 years. He came to Fantesca with extensive experience working with Michelin starred Chefs, retail/web sales, fine and rare wine brokerage, global education, and corporate sales, marketing, and strategy.
Drawn to Fantesca by the winery’s ethos, DLynn is a passionate ambassador, instrumental in winery education programs, media relations and international communication. He often contributes to food and wine content and to TV shows and print magazines. In addition, he travels extensively to speak publicly and represent Fantesca to customers, consumers, journalists, and distributors in a variety of global forums.
