The organically farmed, 15-acre vineyard is perched on a secluded mountaintop at 1,400 ft. elevation in the western reaches of the Pritchard Hill geography of Napa Valley. Here, Ovid farms rocky red, volcanic soils to capture a true sense of place and craft long-lived wines composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. They ferment only with native yeasts and bottle our wines without fining or filtering. Their Winemaker since 2006, Austin Peterson, combines his site-specific experience with a sense of experimentation, embracing a tension between classical and cutting-edge winemaking methods.
The name was inspired by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso [Ovid], whose METAMORPHOSES, a poetic retelling of the Greek myths, celebrates themes of transformation and change. Winemaking is a transformation from grapes to the sublime; and the works of Ovid – rich and timely, yet steeped in tradition – inform and aspire their winemaking philosophy. They value lasting relationships and sustainable farming and winemaking, all with the goal of creating wines that transmit a unique sense of place and time.
OVID was established in 1998 by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson, who bottled their inaugural vintage in 2005. The following year, Winemaker Austin Peterson began his career at OVID, having compiled an impressive resume that included winery positions in prestigious winegrowing regions around the world. Since then, Austin and his team have furthered their discovery of these unique Pritchard Hill soils and micro-climates in our estate wines, while also sourcing dynamic fruit from exciting California wine regions for our Experiment wines.
A NEW CHAPTER
In 2017, Mark and Dana, seeking a new chapter in their lives, entrusted old friends (and long-time customers) David Duncan and Jack Bittner as stewards of this special place on Pritchard Hill. Today, they continue their work in the same classic winemaking style familiar to our long-time customers, while also providing Austin and his team with new resources to continue their discovery of this serene and wonderful vineyard site.
For more than 25 years, Jack Bittner has led domestic and international sales and marketing efforts, winemaking and operations across the Napa Valley. In his current role as Managing Partner of OVID, Jack oversees daily operations. Earlier in his career, Jack served as chairman of the Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association and president of Cliff Lede Vineyards.
Jack holds an MBA from UC Davis, sits on the board of Schramsberg, the Napa Valley Vintners and remains active in the Northern California Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization.
Pulido~Walker is the culmination of a patient journey toward the possible. Under the watchful eye of our winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown, Pulido~Walker chose two remarkable vineyard sites where the natural alchemy of geography, soil, climate, and clone combine to yield a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon greater than the sum of its parts.
Pritchard Hill’s Melanson Vineyard immediately captivated Thomas’ attention as he and Mark drove its steep and rugged, boulder-strewn grounds. Located on a rocky, gentle knoll along the old Napa River bed wash in St. Helena, the Panek Vineyard possessed all the characteristics to yield superb fruit and is Thomas’ personal selection for his own vineyard designate.
In each of these sought after vineyards, we carefully thin our vines several times throughout the growing season, leaving only the very best fruit for hand selection during harvest. Our winemaking takes a non-interventionist approach crafting natural wines that reflect their unique terroir.
Proprietors Mark Pulido and Donna Walker grew up in pharmacy families, and this early common experience is integral to the Pulido~Walker philosophy. Their scientific backgrounds make Mark and Donna precise, inquisitive, and detailed; they know that perseverance and attentive observation yield results worth waiting for.
Mark and Donna own a 115-acre Estate in the Mt. Veeder Appellation of Napa Valley. After years of patient observation and collection of precise data on the estate’s microclimates and soil composition, they planted the best fifteen acres: 25% dedicated to Chardonnay and 75% to Cabernet Sauvignon in July 2015.
One of the country’s top wine talents, Thomas Rivers Brown, was named 2010’s winemaker of the year by Food & Wine magazine. Over the last decade, Thomas has received not just one but eight 100-point Wine Advocate Parker scores to go along with two 100-Point awards from Wine Spectator.
