Helmed by Chris Lopez, Fine Folk was born out of a tumultuous period for restaurants and bars. After the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lopez pivoted his previous Southern-inspired restaurant to a low-brow burger joint called Gov’t Cheeseburger- gaining an instant cult-like following. Ultimately, the restaurant fell victim to the pandemic and Fine Folk was quickly whipped into existence.
Not knowing what came next, Fine Folk launched as a pop-up out of one of Raleigh’s most infamous cocktail bars- Foundation. After starting construction on their forever home in Gateway Plaza, the crew moved their operation to the soon-to-be neighbor, Union Special- transforming the bakery’s space into a full-service restaurant every single night.
Fine Folk is now open, and while the burger that started it all remains, the concept has evolved into a wildly fun take on American chain restaurants.
