Above all accolades and titles, Preeti Waas has always prioritized her role as a mother. Her North Raleigh restaurant, Cheeni Indian Food Emporium, is the recent brick-and-mortar realization of her former home bakery. Her latest location is a dream come true: all Preeti has ever wanted to do is feed people, keep her family close, and have a space that allows her to do both of those things. She is thrilled to have opened Cheeni’s Durham location alongside her daughter, staying true to Cheeni’s origins as a family business.

Preeti’s success with Cheeni is directly related to her involvement in the local community of restauranteurs, women entrepreneurs, and all the friends she’s made along the way. For Preeti, that sense of community is incredibly important. Born and raised in India, Preeti moved to the United States in her twenties and soon after began raising her family, but spent many years searching for a community that felt like home. In Raleigh, through Cheeni, and working with her family, she’s finally found it; and she couldn’t be happier.

Preeti has been cooking her whole life, and her career in food and hospitality has given her a sense of purpose and belonging. She loves what she does, and she firmly believes that food is healing, comfort, and a source of connection. As a home cook, she was blown away by her 2023 James Beard Semifinalist nomination and all the media attention that both of her restaurants have received. She is wholeheartedly grateful for the opportunity to do what she loves through Cheeni, and she’s looking forward to what’s next. Preeti is honored and excited to be a part of the Triangle Wine and Food Experience, especially in support of the Frankie Lemmon School & Developmental Center, and the incredible service they provide within the local community.
